A Post For The Bored II

So, here's the second part in the articles section of my linkspam posts for the bored.

After the cut.
The first section IS:

SCIENCE

Tiny T-Rex Dinosaur Discovered (In fossil form, in case you just got excited that it was alive). This is kind of a misleading article title in many ways, the biggest error being the adjective of "Tiny." Because I don't know about you, but when I think tiny I thought of a Chihuahua sized t-rex of cuteness. But *spoileralert* this "tiny" dinosaur was 9 feet tall and weighed about 150 pounds. That's as heavy as a wolf, and taller than any human. So I dunno about you but that's not tiny, and still terrifying. -ly awesome, that is. So cute!!

Dinosaur-Era Crocodiles Found in Sahara. Another misleader, since again, they're fossils, but the artist renditions of these creatures are spectacular, and further terrifying. Also amazing, considering how much they STILL look like their modern relatives. I love crocs.

The Science of Adventure: This Is Your Brain On Adventure. Ever wonder what your brain looks like when you're getting a great adrenaline rush? Here you go. It's a super interesting article and the lead-in to the rest of my SCIENCE section, all of which deal with your brain in some way. Also, if you look real close, you'll spot my brother mentioned in the article! Hint: he jumps off a fucking cliff.

Creative Minds "Mimic Schizophrenia." Tell me something I DON'T know. This is a great little read for all us creative minds out there who just have so much stuff rattling around in there it's making us crazy!

Neurocinema Aims To Change the Way Movies Are Made. Super interesting to all us filmmakers, at least if you're interested in the science of how we perceive and process films and the images we see in them.

The Neuroscience of Inception, because people aren't talking about this movie enough XD. (I just love me some adorkable Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Okay, okay, smokin' hot.)

Lucid Dreaming FAQ. I would love to train myself how to lucid dream. i am working on it, have had a few "excursions," but nothing that would make me say I can do it at will. I think I need a loaded die or a top. Just not a fucking chess piece that I have to tip over. I mean, what a retarded totem. srsly.

The Uberman Sleep Schedule. This Uberman sleep schedule if for people who want to HOLYFUCKING SHIT SLEEP LIKE THREE HOURS A DAY. It's INSANE which makes me LOVE IT. I would never want it, though, I like sleeping in a chunk and being lazy, but this is intense and I am going to have a character use it someday.

THE FUTURE

This section has some speculative articles, some extra terrestrial stuff, and some space stuff. And when I say some, I mean one.

Reaching For The Stars When Space Was A Thrill. I know what you're thinking. WTF is a past tense verb doing in a future section? Well, because I said so. That's why. This article is a slightly depressing take on the idea of space and human space flight from the perspective of a guy who tried to get in back when it was really cool, i.e. when we were landing on the moon and stuff. Kind of a nostalgia article, I guess.

15 Reasons to Live For the Next Ten Years. This is slightly off topic (this paragraph, not the article, the article freaking rocks and made me excited for the next decade!), but the title of the article bothers me. I think it's because I am revisiting it now, after having read it initially before someone I knew died tragically young in February. It sucks to have it thrown in your face in a roundabout way, saying look! look! He won't get to! It's just a bullshit title. I mean, what's the point of phrasing it that way? To try to keep someone from committing suicide? Fat chance that article will prevent that. What if the person reading is a terminally ill cancer patient, or a geriatric in their 90s? Why not just call the fucking thing "15 Reasons to Look Forward to the Next 10 Years"? Is that so hard? Hm. Am I overly sensitive? Probably.

Will ET Look Like Us? I really liked this article. I just like aliens in general. But I always kind of wonder how accurate anything can be. This article goes a bit against what a book told me about ET life when I was writing a paper on the subject. You have to distinguish first if it's a complex organism we would compare to ourselves or not. For example, it's unlikely an alien lifeform would develop a civilization underwater. It just doesn't make sense to have electricity, radios, etc (the ability to send radio transmissions/waves being the SETI definition of a civilization). It's likely they'll have some form of appendage like our arms that they can use for complex things like writing, building, etc. They'll probably have some form of mouth and anus, have bilateral symmetry, and have a head with a CNS type of thing. But who knows what all that would actually LOOK like.

Here's the motherload:

SOCIETY AND MISCELLANEOUS.
This section has some leftovers from last time, some interesting articles about society, gender, the media, law enforcement, and then a couple of random but fun or cool things like an all-female warrior group in the Ukraine who call themselves the Asgarda.

How Facts Backfire

The Problem With Eyewitness Testimony

Pornography, Rape, and Sex Crimes in Japan

All Joy and No Fun: Why Parents Hate Parenting

A Thousand Blooms: Inside Joss Whedon's Dollhouse

A Distinct Lack of Shouting. A blog article from the blog "Girls Read Comics (and they're pissed)" on how to make a female character that doesn't suck.

Battleship Island & Other Ruined Urban High-Density Sites. Creeeeepy.

Asgarda: they kick fucking ass. We can haz movie now, plz? Seriously, this has all the makings of a GREAT action film.

Now This Is How You Tell A Zombie Debt Collector To Buzz Off. It's made of win.

The END! I might post more linkspams in the future, in sections like all the online graphic novels I read, or all the articles I have with tips on writing, or all the cool DIY projects I adore, etc. If you've liked what I've given you to fill your boredom, please come back sometime! :)
