A couple of weeks ago Elizabeth and I bought tickets to Namibia.
For those of you who failed Geography, Namibia is on the West coast of Africa, south of Angola, and west of Botswana.
I cannot wait. We will be there for a month, traveling in the country, going to Zambia, etc. etc. We are meeting two friends there, who will be paragliding and doing fun adventure-y things (and hopefully Elizabeth will get some of that too!).
I'm hoping to expand my very, very limited world view and appreciate a country and the people inside it that have a different history from mine, different perspectives that I can learn from, and hopefully I will give back to the country as well in the form of my tourism (Wikipedia lists this as the major industry of Namibia).
I am hoping to see the wildlife of Africa in a context in which they are not caged in tiny enclosures in a zoo somewhere in the middle of a city.
I know that I have a white, USA privilege that I must do my best to not let cloud my judgment and opinions--I will be conforming, and happily so, to what Namibians prefer modesty-wise, and will do my best to be respectful of the country and cultures that I am going to be infringing upon.
I think it's going to be amazing!
Yeah!!!
